An Italian walnut buffet, early nineteenth century. The façade is organized with three drawers above two doors, the registers separated by a carved diamond-motif band — a detail that references the Italian Baroque and Renaissance tradition of diamond-point ornament while situating the piece within the more restrained early-nineteenth-century taste. The doors open to spacious shelved interiors. A scalloped apron adds a note of refinement to the lower section, and brass hardware provides contrast against the dark walnut. The sides carry recessed panels. The walnut has developed the deep, warm patina characteristic of well-aged Italian hardwood furniture, the surface enriched by more than two centuries of wax and handling. A substantial and well-proportioned example of early-nineteenth-century Italian provincial cabinetmaking. 63.4"W × 24"D × 42"H.
