Italian Empire Style Bedside Chest with Ebonized Columns, Mid-19th Century
An Italian Empire style bedside chest, mid-19th century, in warm walnut with three drawers flanked by ebonized columns headed and footed in gilt-metal mounts. The contrast of dark columns and bright mounts against figured walnut is the classic Empire formula, here rendered at intimate bedside scale and raised on turned feet. A frieze drawer sits beneath the molded top, with two deeper drawers below providing real storage. Pieces of this quality serve equally well beside a bed, as an end table in a living room, or as a small chest in an entry. The surface carries an attractive aged patina, the drawers run properly, and wear is consistent with age and use.
