An Italian Neoclassical-style carved pine bookcase, circa 1900. The piece is tall and architecturally conceived, with a molded cornice surmounted by dentil molding and an ovoid frieze. The upper section is articulated with two rounded arches springing from elongated Corinthian capitals atop fluted pilasters, the open shelves within suited to books and display objects. The lower section is enclosed by two paneled doors flanked by Doric-order pilasters, providing closed storage in deliberate contrast to the open upper register. The whole rests on a plinth with projecting base moldings. The carved pine has developed a warm natural patina with age. An imposing and well-detailed piece in the Italian classical tradition, at home in a library, study, or formal reception room. 53.6"W × 18.5"D × 89.75"H.
