Large Louis XVI Giltwood Mirror with Laurel and Torch Crest, 18th Century
A large Louis XVI period mirror, French, 18th century, in carved giltwood on its original painted ground, retaining its original mercury glass. The crest is a tour de force of carving: a laurel wreath tied with ribbon over a crossed torch and quiver, flanked by urn finials, with laurel-entwined columns framing the plate. The water gilding has softened to a warm glow against the green painted ground, and the mercury plate carries the gentle foxing that only genuine 18th century glass acquires. Period mirrors keeping their original glass and gilding together are increasingly rare survivors. It commands a mantel, console, or entry wall single-handedly, with wear consistent with age.
