A French Louis XIV-style walnut buffet, eighteenth century. The façade presents two drawers above two doors carved with X-form and quatrefoil motifs — decorative devices rooted in the formal, geometric ornamental vocabulary of the Louis XIV period, which favored bold, architecturally derived patterns over the flowing naturalism of the Rococo that would follow. A simply carved apron finishes the lower section, and the piece is raised on straight legs. The walnut is warm in tone with a well-developed patina consistent with age. The Louis XIV style, associated with the grandeur of the court of Versailles, produced furniture of considerable authority, and provincial interpretations such as this translate the style's formal language into the more direct idiom of regional cabinetmaking. A handsome and well-proportioned period buffet. 52.5"W × 24.75"D × 41"H.
