A Louis XVI period console, Provencal, late 18th century, the carved four-leg frame in its original pale paint beneath a thick top of black Pyrenees marble veined in white. The frieze is pierced and carved with openwork panels punctuated by rosettes and centered on a foliate tablet, raised on round fluted tapered legs. Period consoles that keep their original paint and marble together are genuinely scarce, and the pale frame beneath the dramatic dark stone is a decorator's dream pairing. It stands stable and sound, ready to serve an entrance, a dining room, or a drawing room pier with equal authority, with wear consistent with age and use.
