A French Louis XV painted buffet, mid-eighteenth century. The rectangular top with a slightly raised profile sits above two drawers, each decorated with a lightly incised cartouche framing the Rococo hardware. Below, a pair of doors with recessed panels and curved moldings opens to two inner shelves. The piece is raised on four feet — scrolled at the front, straight at the rear — connected by a delicate scalloped skirt on three sides, the curved apron one of the most characteristic features of the Louis XV idiom. The painted finish is a soft grey, a color that flatters the linear composition and the gentle curves of the Rococo ornament. The painted surface shows appropriate age and wear. A well-proportioned and quietly elegant example of the French mid-eighteenth-century buffet tradition. 53"W × 23.75"D × 44.5"H.
