Made in France in the twentieth century, this pair of Louis XVI style marquetry bedside tables is finished with decorative inlay, one table opening with three drawers and the other with a niche and a single drawer. The differing configurations give the pair variety while maintaining a matched appearance. Marquetry, the inlay of contrasting woods, decorates the surfaces, adding fine pattern in keeping with the Louis XVI style. The neoclassical lines of the style are seen in the restrained forms and tapering legs. As a pair, the tables suit placement either side of a bed, offering symmetry with a degree of variation in their storage. The three-drawer table provides enclosed storage, while the niche of its companion offers open display.
