A pair of period provincial Rococo chairs, Swedish, circa 1790, scraped to their original paint and newly covered in linen. Made in the countryside as the Rococo lingered in provincial workshops, the chairs combine softly curved backs with the plainspoken construction that gives Swedish country furniture its enduring appeal. Their original painted surfaces, recovered by careful layer-by-layer scraping, show the powdery, mellowed color that separates true period paint from any later finish. Fresh linen seats make the pair immediately usable as bedroom chairs, accent seating, or dining supplements. Period pairs in first paint are cornerstones of the Swedish antiques market and increasingly difficult to source. Both frames are sound; wear is consistent with age.
