Made in Sweden around 1850, this large pair of Gustavian style demi-lune tables has been repainted in grey. The demi-lune, or half-moon, form is designed to sit flush against a wall, and a pair placed together forms a complete circle. The Gustavian style, the Swedish interpretation of neoclassicism, is expressed in the restrained lines and the characteristically muted grey palette seen in the repainted surface. The generous scale of these tables gives them presence in a hall or reception room. Suited to placement against a wall, between windows, or flanking a doorway, the tables provide a surface for lighting, display, or objects. As a matched pair, they allow balanced placement at either side of an entrance or seating group, or can be brought together as a round table. Their painted Gustavian character suits both period and plainer modern interiors.
