A pair of Swedish Rococo armchairs, circa 1840, in blue paint over oak, newly covered in natural linen over the original first layer of upholstery. The chairs carry the full Rococo vocabulary rendered with Swedish restraint: shaped vase splats, serpentine crests, scrolled arms, and cabriole legs joined by turned stretchers. The dry blue surface has softened beautifully, the dark oak showing through at the edges and high points. Pairs of painted Rococo armchairs are among the most sought-after of Swedish seating, serving fireside duty, bracketing a console, or heading a dining table. Both chairs are sound and comfortable, with wear consistent with age and use.
