A distinguished example of 18th-century Swedish craftsmanship, this Rococo period commode is signed by renowned cabinetmaker Johan Martin Ek (1734–1795), active in Stockholm during one of the most artistically refined periods of Scandinavian furniture design. Created circa 1770, the commode features a gracefully serpentine front with three full drawers, each framed by softly curving lines that emphasize the flowing Rococo silhouette.
The piece is crafted from pine, a traditional material favored by Swedish artisans for its durability and its responsiveness to painted finishes. Over time, this commode has acquired a matte black painted surface with artful distressing, revealing glimpses of its natural wood beneath and enhancing the sculptural quality of its form. The current iron ring pulls and escutcheons are later additions, thoughtfully chosen to complement the commode’s understated elegance.
