19th century set of eight Swedish Gustavian spindle-back chairs, scraped to their original paint and newly upholstered in natural linen. The backs carry turned spindles beneath shaped crest rails, with carved rosettes at the leg blocks and turned, tapered legs joined by shaped stretchers, the full vocabulary of the period rendered with charm and confidence. The dry, chalky scraped surface is exactly what collectors of Swedish painted furniture prize, no two chairs worn quite alike yet the set reading beautifully together. Eight matched period chairs are a genuinely rare survival, furnishing a full dining table in one stroke with fresh linen seats ready for use. All eight are sound, with wear consistent with age.
