A southwestern French Louis XV painted buffet à deux-corps, circa 1760, from the Bordeaux-Dordogne-Basque region. The molded cornice overhangs the upper section, which presents two tall doors with chicken-wire panels — the grillage en fil de fer being a regional variant of the glazed door found in formal buffets, allowing ventilation and display of contents while protecting stored items. The four interior shelves are well-preserved. The lower section is the pantalonnière — a form specific to southwestern French furniture, consisting of long drawers designed for the storage of folded garments — with a delicately carved skirt and scrolled front feet with straight rear feet. The soft grey painted finish is characteristic of the southwestern French taste and complements the Louis XV silhouette. An interesting and regionally specific example of mid-eighteenth-century provincial French cabinetmaking. 56.25"W × 25"D × 102"H.
