A Swedish painted bookcase, circa 1850. The piece is finished in grey with a soft blue cast — a color characteristic of Scandinavian painted furniture of the period, where mineral-pigmented paints produced tones that have deepened and mellowed with age. The cornice is detailed with carved dentil molding, lending the piece an architectural formality consistent with the better Swedish cabinetmaking of the mid-nineteenth century. The upper section is fitted with open shelves; the base incorporates two drawers above bracket feet. The form is rectilinear and well-proportioned throughout. The painted surface shows age-appropriate wear. 56.5"W × 22.25"D × 73.75"H.
