This Karl Johan stool was made in Sweden in the nineteenth century and is fitted with carrying handles, in the late neoclassical taste of the period. The frame has been repainted in black, with the original webbing retained beneath, and the stool bears an 'ABFS' brand mark. Stools of this kind were compact and portable, used as extra seating or as footstools and moved easily about the home. The black paint gives the stool a uniform, restrained surface. As a single piece, it suits use as a footstool before a chair, as occasional seating in a hall, or at the end of a bench. Suited to both period and plainer modern interiors, the stool combines practical function with period character. As a Karl Johan stool with handles, it offers a portable seat together with the restrained neoclassical character and aged surface of nineteenth-century Swedish furniture.
