Made in Sweden around 1800, possibly on the island of Gotland, this provincial Gustavian sofa bench has been scraped to its original paint and newly covered in linen. The Gustavian style, the Swedish interpretation of neoclassicism, is seen here in a provincial form with honest, country character. Scraping the frame to the original paint preserves the early decorated surface, while the fresh linen leaves the bench ready for use. The long form provides seating for several sitters. Suited to placement against a wall, at the foot of a bed, in an entrance hall, or beneath a window, the bench offers seating with strong period character. The original paint and linen cover balance authenticity with practicality. Suited to both period and plainer modern interiors, the bench serves as both functional seating and a decorative object. As a provincial Gustavian sofa bench, it offers period seating with the calm character of Swedish country furniture.
