A Swedish black painted secretaire, 19th century, its fall front concealing a beautifully fitted interior of small drawers and a central compartment in warm contrasting wood. The case is framed by fluted corner pilasters with gilt-bronze detailing, above three full-width drawers with ring pulls, the whole raised on tapered feet. The aged black surface has worn softly at the edges, setting off the glint of the bronze hardware, and the locks retain their tasseled keys. Closed, it reads as a handsome chest of drawers; open, it provides a complete writing station with storage for correspondence. Equally at home in a living room, study, or bedroom. Wear is consistent with age and use.
