A Swedish country sideboard from the Gustavian period, late eighteenth century. The piece follows the classic straight-sided form of Gustavian country furniture — two drawers above two doors on tall tapered legs, the simple rectilinear silhouette and slender leg profile characteristic of the Swedish Neoclassical country tradition, in which the formal language of the Gustavian style was translated into rural production with unpretentious directness. The working lock and key are intact, a detail increasingly rare in country pieces of this age and a confirmation of the original hardware's survival. The tall tapered leg, one of the most immediately recognizable features of Gustavian furniture, gives the piece the light, airy quality that distinguishes the Swedish interpretation of Neoclassicism from its heavier Continental counterparts. An honest and well-preserved example of Swedish late-eighteenth-century country cabinetmaking.
