A Swedish Gustavian-style painted sideboard, nineteenth century. The rectangular top with rounded corners overhangs a single reeded drawer fitted with classical hardware above two doors that open to a storage interior. The piece is raised on splaying legs connected at the front by a scalloped apron. The Gustavian style, developed in Sweden under King Gustav III following his formative visit to Versailles in the 1770s, interpreted French Neoclassicism through a distinctly Scandinavian sensibility — the architectural clarity of the style expressed in painted softwood with restrained ornamental detail. The reeded motifs on the drawer face are typical of the Swedish Neoclassical vocabulary. The painted surface is in a soft tone consistent with the tradition. 38.25"W × 25"D × 29.75"H.
