A Swedish round center table, circa 1840, of impressive scale, over 47 inches in diameter, from the Karl Johan period of Swedish furniture making. The generous top rests on a boldly turned central pedestal raised on four shaped feet, all in a dark finish that gives the table quiet gravity, substantial without heaviness. Large round tables of this date are far scarcer than rectangular forms and correspondingly useful: commanding the middle of an entrance hall, serving as an intimate dining or breakfast table, or anchoring a library beneath a chandelier. The surface has mellowed over nearly two centuries to a warm, tactile patina. A versatile statement piece with wear consistent with age and use.
