A French Louis XV walnut buffet from Provence, circa 1750. The rectangular top has rounded corners and sits above a long single drawer carved with scrolling cartouches. Two doors below are each decorated with fan-carved motifs — a detail characteristic of Provençal Louis XV cabinetmaking — and open to inner shelves. The piece rests on four cabriole legs with a scalloped apron on three sides, the curved lines and naturalistic ornament exemplifying the Rococo sensibility as interpreted by southern French craftsmen. Provençal walnut buffets of this period are distinguished by the warm honey-amber tone of regional walnut and the confident, regional character of their carving — related to but distinct from Parisian work. The walnut has developed a rich patina consistent with its age. 50"W × 28"D × 41"H.
