A French wrought iron freestanding firescreen, circa 1880, Belle Époque period. The armature is carried on two lateral twisted uprights resting on arched feet, while the central field — the visual focus of the piece — is animated by arched accents and an abundance of C-scrolls, demonstrating the assured hand of a skilled French metalworker. Two small hinged doors at the center open by means of a latch, allowing access to the hearth without removing the screen. Warming holders are incorporated into the design. The wrought iron has developed a characteristic patina through more than a century of use. A practical and decorative fireplace accessory in the finest tradition of French nineteenth-century ironwork.
