Made in France in the twentieth century, this pair of Louis XVI style tables is constructed in cherrywood, each with a drawer at the front fitted with a working lock and key. The tops are decorated with green wood stringing, inlaid and edged on all sides, adding a fine linear detail to the surface. The neoclassical lines of the Louis XVI style are seen in the restrained forms and tapering legs. Cherrywood gives a warm, golden-toned surface, and the green stringing provides a subtle decorative contrast. As a matched pair, the tables suit use either side of a bed, flanking a sofa, or as occasional tables in a reception room. The working locks add a degree of security to the drawers, and the inlaid tops give the pair a refined finish. Their balanced proportions allow them to work within both period and plainer modern interiors.
