A Swedish chest of drawers, circa 1820, in a pleasing mid-scale format just over 30 inches wide, from the late Gustavian period when Swedish cabinetmakers were producing their most refined and restrained work. The chest combines clean neoclassical proportions with honest provincial construction, and its surface has acquired the soft, mellowed patina of two centuries of careful use. The moderate width makes it exceptionally easy to place, generous enough to anchor a wall in a bedroom or hall, compact enough for bedside use in a larger room. Swedish chests of this date remain among the most versatile of all antique case pieces, moving gracefully between period and contemporary rooms. Wear is consistent with age.
