A French walnut commode dating to the 18th century, in the Louis XVI style, fitted with two long drawers. The top and both drawer fronts are outlined with fine inlaid banding in contrasting light and dark woods, a checkered stringing that gives the piece its crisp neoclassical character. Canted, fluted front corners frame the case, and the sides are set with recessed panels. Each drawer has a pair of brass rosette pulls and a central keyhole escutcheon. The case rests on a gently shaped apron and square tapered legs.
The walnut has developed a warm, even patina, with minor losses and wear consistent with age and use. Its compact scale suits a bedroom, entry, or living room, where it works equally well as a small chest, a bedside commode, or a console.
