19th Century French Leather Hat Box
A 19th century French leather hat box, a handsome survivor from the golden age of elegant travel. The box retains its original leather body with the rich, burnished color that well-handled leather acquires over a century and a half, along with its period hardware. The interior was refitted by previous owners, and the top strap is partially cut, honest evidence of a long working life that adds to its character rather than detracting from it. Antique luggage of this kind is perennially popular with designers as sculptural accessories: stacked in a library, placed atop an armoire, or used as a decorative catchall in an entry.
