19th Century Italian Marble Sculpture of a Seated Boy, Possibly Cupid
An Italian white marble sculpture, 19th century, depicting a young boy, possibly Cupid, seated on a naturalistically carved rock. The figure is rendered with the soft modeling and tender expression of the period's finest decorative sculpture, the smooth polish of the body playing against the rough-hewn surface of the base, and similar works have been attributed to, or inspired by, the style of artists such as Etienne Maurice Falconet. Marble figures of this intimate scale were the ornaments of refined 19th century interiors and serve the same role today: on a console, a mantel, a pedestal, or completing a bookcase vignette. The marble is in good order, with wear consistent with age.
