A Set of Six Gustavian Chairs Circa 1820
A handsome set of six period Gustavian stickback chairs, each displaying the restrained elegance and craftsmanship associated with late eighteenth-century Swedish design. The tall, tapered backs are arranged with slender vertical splats, creating an airy architectural rhythm, while the square seats and straight legs give the group a poised, balanced profile. Scraped back to layers of old grey paint, the chairs reveal traces of earlier finishes, natural wear, and warm wood beneath, lending each piece an individual surface and authentic sense of age. Blue-and-white checked upholstery offers a fresh, informal contrast to the timeworn frames. Elegant yet approachable, this versatile set would sit beautifully around a dining table, bringing texture, history, and Scandinavian character to a contemporary or traditional interior. The painted finish is a classic Gustavian Gray (Gustavian Grey).
