Made in Denmark in the eighteenth century, this bow-fronted rococo secretary has been repainted in black with a blue interior. The rococo form, with its curved bow front, is seen here in the Danish manner, and the secretary combines a fall front and drawer arrangement with interior fittings for writing and storage. The repainted black exterior gives a strong, uniform surface, while the blue interior provides a contrasting accent when the piece is open. As a secretary, it served as a writing and storage piece, suited to a study, sitting room, or bedroom. The bow front gives the case movement and presence, and the painted finish suits both period interiors and plainer modern rooms. Combining storage, a writing surface, and decorative form, the secretary works as a functional and characterful piece of case furniture in a variety of domestic settings.
