The buck is resting behind bushes on the right while the doe grazes peacefully on the grass. The artist played with the light and shadows to compose his piece, a strong diagonal dividing the space carefully. Bert Fricke Wolfenbuttel was a hunting painter known for its representations of wild animals. He trained at the Braunschweig and Hanover art schools and was active at the beginning of the last century. The painting is set inside a simple frame whose natural finish complements the subject beautifully. It is signed lower right.
