A Venetian Louis XVI-style sideboard in cherry wood, early nineteenth century. The piece is organized with four drawers above four doors — a generous configuration that provides substantial storage capacity across the full width of the piece, the large interior space well suited to the storage of table linens, silverware, and household provisions.
The Louis XVI style, with its disciplined Neoclassical lines and restrained ornament, was produced throughout the Veneto in cherry — a wood particularly prized in the region for its warm reddish-gold tone and fine, even grain.
The cherry has mellowed to the characteristic warm amber of well-aged examples, the surface enriched by more than two centuries of domestic use. Venetian cabinetmaking of this period combined French stylistic influence with the distinctive refinement of the northern Italian tradition. A handsome and well-proportioned sideboard of generous scale.
