This pair of large cast-stone garden flower urns was made in England in the mid-to-late twentieth century. Generously scaled, the urns are designed to make a strong statement in a garden or on a terrace, where their size gives them presence among planting or architecture. Cast stone, a composite of aggregate and cement, was the standard material for garden ornament of the period, reproducing classical urn forms while standing up to outdoor conditions. The form follows the traditional garden urn, suited to planting or to use as a standalone ornamental feature. Time outdoors has given the surface a weathered character consistent with garden use. Offered as a pair, the urns work well flanking an entrance, gateway, or flight of steps, or positioned as matching focal points within a garden, on a terrace, or at the ends of a planted border.
