A pair of large English cast-stone maiden garden figures, twentieth century, designed as opposing compositions. Large-scale figural statuary of this type was produced by specialist English garden ornament workshops throughout the twentieth century, drawing on classical and eighteenth-century prototypes to create pieces of architectural presence suitable for grand gardens, formal terraces, and entrance courts. The maiden form — classical in pose and drapery — was among the most enduring subjects in this tradition. Both figures are cast in aggregate stone and have developed substantial weathered patinas consistent with extended outdoor placement. The opposing arrangement allows the pair to be installed flanking a doorway, garden gate, or staircase. Priced individually.
