An English wicker basket from a fabric mill, circa 1900, of generous rectangular form with a hinged lid, leather strap fittings, and the mill name Stevensons painted in sweeping black script across the front. Baskets of this type trundled between the weaving floors of English mills carrying cloth and yarn, and the best of them, like this one, survive with their lettering intact and their weave sound. Today they make wonderful log baskets beside a fireplace, blanket chests at the foot of a bed, or storage for toys and linens, bringing instant texture and history to a room. The wicker is strong and the lid operates properly, with wear consistent with a working life.
