A French Henri II period walnut buffet, sixteenth century. The piece is carved with the distinctive folded-cloth (linge plissé) ornament that is one of the most recognizable signatures of the French Renaissance under Henri II — a decorative device in which the surface of doors or panels is carved to simulate the crisp folds of draped linen, a motif of Italian Mannerist origin introduced to France through the workshops of Fontainebleau. The two doors are the principal field for this ornament, the carving executed with the confident, deeply undercut technique of the period. Two drawers above carry a simpler treatment. Acanthus leaf motifs provide additional Renaissance ornamental vocabulary. The walnut has developed the exceptionally deep, near-black patina characteristic of sixteenth-century French furniture. A rare and historically significant example of Henri II period cabinetmaking. 54.625"W × 24.25"D × 39.5"H.
