A French Louis XV style cherry wood planter, 1850s. The form is animated by curving lines and pierced quatrefoil motifs characteristic of the Rococo Revival taste of mid-nineteenth-century France, which looked back to the exuberant aesthetic of the Louis XV period for its decorative vocabulary. The sides are pierced with quatrefoils, the scalloped apron continues the curvilinear rhythm on all sides, and four cabriole legs provide an appropriately elegant support. A tôle inset liner has been fitted within. The cherry has developed a warm, honey-toned patina. A refined and functional interior planter suited to a living room, foyer, or hallway.
