Made in France in the eighteenth century, this carved giltwood mirror is set between two wood paneling panels on a painted ground. The arrangement combines a central mirror plate with flanking boiserie panels, the carved giltwood framing reading against the painted background to give a decorative wall composition. Carved and gilded detailing, characteristic of eighteenth-century French interior woodwork, provides relief and richness around the glass. The horizontal, panelled format suits placement above a console, chest, or fireplace, or as an architectural feature on a wall where its width can be appreciated. The contrast of gilded carving against the painted ground gives the piece depth and presence. As a wall composition it returns light and introduces an element of period French interior decoration to a reception room, hall, or dining room, working as a focal point above a piece of furniture or on its own.
