An eighteenth-century French trumeau in the Louis XVI taste, this mirror retains its original plate and original painted surface in soft, muted tones. The panelled frame is finished with a finely carved inner border, reflecting the neoclassical vocabulary of the period. The original glass shows gentle foxing and age-related imperfections consistent with its date, qualities valued in early mirror plates. Architectural in form and vertical in proportion, the trumeau is designed to sit above a console, commode, or fireplace, where its height carries the eye upward. The aged paint holds the wear and patina of an authentic period surface. The combination of original glass and original paint gives the piece documentary as well as decorative interest. Its restrained palette and clean lines allow it to work above a mantel or chest in both traditional and plainer interiors.
