Made in France in the nineteenth century, this desk is worked in wood veneer in the Louis XVI taste. The front is fitted with four drawers, one of them doubled on the right, and with two pull-out side slides finished on both faces; every drawer has a working lock and key. The top and the slides are covered in black leather tooled in gilt, which has been renewed. The four legs are sheathed and end in sabots. Finished on all sides as a freestanding desk, it is suited to placement in the centre of a study or office, where it can be approached from either side. The wood surface and gilt-tooled leather give a restrained, formal appearance consistent with the neoclassical style. The working locks and renewed writing surface make the desk ready for practical daily use in a working study.
