A small French terracotta sculpture from the 19th century depicting a walking elephant with trunk raised, tusks and great expression. The sculpture depicts an Asian elephant walking forward. His trunk raised above his ivory tusks suggests he may be trumpeting or grabbing leaves from a tree in order to eat them. His finely shaped ears are tucked to the back and his tail to the side. The finesse of the details is evident, particularly seen on his skin, the expression of his serious eyes and the folds gathering around some of his knees. With its small proportions and skillful depiction, this French terracotta elephant sculpture from the 19th century will make for a charming decorative to any home, perhaps placed atop a commode, side table or on a bookshelf.
