Made in France in the twentieth century, this commode is worked in walnut in the Louis XVI taste. Two drawers span the front, each fitted with drop handles and framed by brass molding that outlines the drawer fronts. The case rests on four tapered, square-section legs ending in sabots, and the front uprights are fluted in the neoclassical manner that defines the style. The proportions are compact and upright, following the restrained lines of the late-eighteenth-century models from which the design descends. Walnut gives a warm, close-grained surface, while the brass mounts add definition to the façade. As a versatile storage piece, the commode suits an entrance hall, bedroom, or living room, where it provides drawer storage and a surface for a lamp or objects. The form works equally in a traditional setting and against a plainer modern interior.
