Made in France, this garden statue is cast in reconstituted stone and dates to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Reconstituted stone, a composite of aggregate and cement, was widely used for French garden statuary because it reproduced the appearance of carved stone while resisting outdoor exposure. The figure is modeled in the round for viewing from multiple angles within a garden setting. Time outdoors has given the surface a weathered tone consistent with genuine garden ornament. Suited to placement on a plinth, among border planting, or at the turn of a path, the statue serves as a focal point in a garden or on a terrace, and can also be used indoors in a garden room or conservatory. Its modest scale allows it to sit comfortably within planting or on a low wall without dominating the surrounding space.
