A pair of French wrought iron andirons, circa 1860. The uprights rise through an openwork scrollwork composition, resolving at the top in a stylized fleur-de-lis — a motif characteristic of the Second Empire period's preference for historicist ornament. The andirons rest on sturdy curved feet and are fitted with rear support bars for log placement. The wrought iron has developed a warm, aged patina over more than a century and a half of use. Andirons of this type were designed as much for visual effect as for function, commanding the hearth as a focal point of the formal French interior. Offered as a pair.
