An Italian seventeenth-century walnut buffet with drop-front and concealed drawers. The upper section features a drop-front panel that opens to reveal five hidden drawers — a form of secret storage characteristic of Italian Renaissance and Baroque case furniture, where the concealment of valuables behind apparently plain surfaces was both practical and a demonstration of the cabinetmaker's ingenuity. A dentil molding crowns this section. Below, two doors with recessed panels and ornate iron hardware provide the primary closed storage. The walnut is of fine quality, the natural grain prominent in the panel faces. The piece carries a deep, dark patina accumulated over more than three centuries of use and handling. An unusual and historically significant example of seventeenth-century Italian cabinetmaking. 67.7"W × 26.3"D × 49.2"H.
