Made in Italy around 1760, this carved pine coffer retains a good colour developed over its long life. The coffer, a form of storage chest, was a staple of domestic furniture used for textiles and household goods, and carved examples are valued for their decorative fronts and aged surfaces. The carving gives the coffer its decorative character, while the pine has mellowed to the warm tone valued in period furniture. Suited to placement at the foot of a bed, in a hall, or against a wall in a living room, the coffer provides generous storage while serving as a decorative object and a surface for display on its lid. Its eighteenth-century date and good colour give it strong period character. The carved front and mellow surface suit both traditional and plainer modern interiors, making it a functional and characterful piece of early Italian case furniture.
