Italian Neoclassical Parquetry Chest of Drawers, c. 1780

An exceptional Italian Neoclassical commode, circa 1780, veneered overall in a diamond lattice parquetry that covers all four graduated drawer fronts and continues uninterrupted across the sides, a labor-intensive treatment that gives the piece extraordinary surface interest from every angle, a hallmark of sophisticated late 18th-century Italian cabinetmaking. Fine line-inlaid banding frames each drawer and defines the case edges, and the whole rises on square tapered feet of elegant proportion. Two centuries of wax and handling have brought the veneers to a luminous honey-amber glow.
