A Bolognese Louis XV game table, mid-18th century, veneered and inlaid in walnut with dotted edging along its curved legs and shaped apron. The fold-over top, banded in contrasting inlay, opens to reveal the original round green baize playing surface, and a frieze drawer with tasseled key stores cards and counters. Closed, the table stands neatly against a wall as an elegant console; open, it becomes the center of an evening, the double life that made game tables essential to 18th century living. Emilian marquetry work of this period is keenly collected, and the table's curves and inlay reward close viewing. The mechanism and drawer work properly, with wear consistent with age.
