Louis XVI Style Inlaid Walnut and Burl Commode, Second Half 19th Century
An Italian Louis XVI style commode, second half of the 19th century, veneered in walnut and burl walnut with a rich herringbone banding of cherry and olive framing the drawer fronts. The three long drawers carry the inlay across a gently bowed front, and the case rises on elegant tapered legs of inverted pyramid form. The interplay of figured burl panels and striped fruitwood banding gives the piece far more surface interest than a plain commode, while the neoclassical lines keep it disciplined. Practical storage at a versatile 47-inch width suits a bedroom, hallway, or living room equally. The veneers are in good order, with a warm patina and wear consistent with age and use.
