Milan North Station, Oil on Panel, Luigi Rossi (1852-1923)
Luigi Rossi (Cassarate 1852 - Tesserete 1923), Milan North Station, oil on panel, signed lower right and titled on the reverse. Rossi trained at the Brera Academy under Giuseppe Bertini and made his debut in 1871 with genre scenes marked by subtle social criticism, a prominent trait of his production. During the 1880s his repertoire widened to mountain landscapes painted en plein air, scenes of rural life, and portraits. From 1885 to 1888 he worked in Paris, where he produced celebrated illustrations for Alphonse Daudet and Pierre Loti; on his return to Milan his encounter with the poet Gian Pietro Lucini turned his painting toward Symbolist currents while keeping its solid verist foundation. He exhibited constantly at the principal Italian and international exhibitions and was honored with posthumous retrospectives in Milan and Lugano in 1924. Wear consistent with age.
